Who can take the SANE course?

You must be a registered nurse in good standing with the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

How long does the course take?

It is a 40-hour didactic course. The course must be completed within 90days to retain the content and be successful passing the course. However, it is self-directed and you can work at your own pace.

What if I have questions about the course content?

You will have contact information for the program coordinator and all your questions can be answered with her.

What if I have trouble accessing or with the program?

You can contact technical assistance through and someone will contact you.

What if I don’t pass the pre-test?

The pre-test is to gauge what you know before taking the course and the progress after you complete the course. You will still pass the course if you answer every question wrong on the pre-test and pass the post-test with an 80% or greater.

When is the deadline to complete the course?

You have 90 days from the time you gain access to the SANE course.

What does the clinical portion consist of?

There are 5 clinical competency requires they include a mock exam, speculum insertion (recognizing abnormal/ normal anatomy), Law enforcement ride along, Rape crisis meeting, Trial observation. THIS WILL BE EXPLAINED IN DETAIL IN THE COURSE.

Can I start the clinicals while taking the didactic portion?

You need to wait until you complete the course content before starting the clinical so you have the content information to understand the clinical component.

Can I practice as a SANE after I complete the didactic course?

No, not on your own, you have to be supervised by a SANE, MD, PA, ARNP until you get approve credentials from Kentucky Board of Nursing.

What if I don’t pass the post-test?

You will be allowed to review the content given it is still within the 90 days of the course and offered another test. If you are not successful on that test you will be required to repeat the course with additional registration and fees.

Will I receive continuing education(CE) hours if I don’t pass the course?

No, CE are only awarded if you are successful with the course and understand the
content.

How do I know who to contact for the clinical requirements.

The clinical components are self-directed but the program coordinator will assist you with information on how to obtain the clinical requirements.
